Become an SOS Volunteer: Give the Gift of Time

Volunteers play a vital role in the development of SOS children. By sharing your time and talent, you can help change a child’s life. We understand that your time is valuable, and SOS truly appreciates this dedication. We accommodate our volunteers by creating a flexible schedule and assistance when needed. Join us as we change the life of a child.

“One of the highlights of tutoring was receiving a graduation picture from a student I had been working with for many years. Written on the back was, ‘This is what all your hard work was for. Thank you.’ ” Bonnie, SOS volunteer tutor for eight years

Tutors and Mentors

Most SOS children have lived in five to seven foster homes before arriving at the Village. Their education has been disrupted many times. Tutors and mentors play a critical role with these youngsters. We try to have one volunteer for each of the 80-plus children in our Chicago and Lockport Villages. These dedicated volunteers forge stable, supportive relationships that help children grow into responsible, well-rounded adults. Tutors also can volunteer for group activities such as the Homework Lab.

Home Helpers

Up to six children live in every SOS home. Imagine preparing a meal while helping six children with their homework! Our Home Helper volunteers come in once a week to help out, either with homework or with cooking.

Recreation and Special Activities

Our volunteers supervise open recreation time and organize activities from special interest clubs to movie night, good-grades rewards and field trips. The opportunities are as endless as the energy and enthusiasm of our volunteers.
