SOS Illinois Participates in Giving Tuesday 2020: A Global Generosity Movement to Support Charities During the Holiday Season

The holiday season is upon us, and our social media feeds are filled with advertisements about scoring the best holiday shopping deals on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. From grabbing toys for children in your family, to finding the perfect gift for your partner or spouse, the days following Thanksgiving are filled with treating yourself and others to something special. This year, we are reminding you that SOS Children’s Villages Illinois is participating in Giving Tuesday 2020, a time to make the holiday season bright for children in foster care.

We’re here to answer some of the most common questions about Giving Tuesday 2020 and share why this one day of the year makes a major impact on charities around the world, as well as the children and families served at SOS Illinois.

What is Giving Tuesday?

Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement that spans far beyond SOS Children’s Villages Illinois. On this global day of giving, organizations and communities around the world celebrate and encourage philanthropy and generosity.

Participating communities, individuals, nonprofits, and businesses mobilize their networks to give back to charities and causes they support. This day of the year stands as both a symbolic measure of a donor’s investment in a cause, and also as an important opportunity to help provide the necessary tools and resources to keep a charity active all year. Last years Giving Tuesday raised almost two billion dollars across the world with in person and online donations!

When is Giving Tuesday?

Giving Tuesday is annually held on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving in the United States. Giving Tuesday 2020 is going to be celebrated this year on December 1, 2020.

Your gift on Giving Tuesday means that we are able to continue providing the highest quality programming and services, educational opportunities, clinical care, in-home family support, and more. Additionally, by making a gift on Giving Tuesday 2020, you can help spread the importance of our mission with others. SOS Illinois is providing social media graphics and messaging to help promote your gift and invite others in your circle to consider giving to our cause.

Other Common Giving Tuesday Questions

We understand that Giving Tuesday is new for some, and we are happy to answer some of the most common questions about this day of giving.

I already made a donation to SOS Illinois this year. Why should I give on Giving Tuesday?

Many of our existing donors find that Giving Tuesday is a wonderful reminder of the power of collective giving. During a time of the year that can seem saturated with purchasing luxury items or non-necessities, being part of a cause like Giving Tuesday shows both the participating organization and your family, friends, and network that you are invested in building a better world through philanthropy. Remembering charities like SOS Illinois on Giving Tuesday is a positive reminder that every person deserves to share in the joy of the holiday season, even if you already made a donation this year.

I can only give a small donation on Giving Tuesday 2020. Is my gift even worth it?

Yes, absolutely! Every gift made on Giving Tuesday, especially to SOS Children’s Villages Illinois, has the power to make a tremendous impact. Did you know that for only $30, you can cover the costs of the unmet financial needs for a child in our care for one day? That is another day of a loving, full-time Foster Parent watching over then, as well as another day with their siblings in the same home, and another day within a dedicated Village, and intentional community.

Additionally, some supporters choose Giving Tuesday to make their first monthly gift as part of our Dream Makers Monthly Giving Program. By breaking a larger gift into monthly gifts, giving monthly offers us the philanthropic support we need at amounts that are easiest for you.

Whatever you decide to give, every gift, no matter the size, helps us to build the future of foster care!

Is my Giving Tuesday gift tax-deductible?

Absolutely! Gifts made to SOS Children’s Villages Illinois are tax-deductible! We are happy to help you with all documentation you need or questions you have when tax season comes.

Giving to another organization? Make sure to screen each organization prior to giving a donation to ensure that your gift is tax-deductible and going to a reputable cause!

How can I make a gift to SOS Illinois on Giving Tuesday 2019?

Making a gift on Giving Tuesday is simple! You can make your gift online here (with options available for one-time giving or monthly gifting). By making your gift online, we are able to put your donation into action right away.

If you prefer to make your gift over the phone, please call our office at 312-372-8200 and let us know that you’re calling to support SOS Illinois in honor of Giving Tuesday!

I am afraid I will forget to give on Giving Tuesday. Can I make my gift early?

Yes, you can! If you decide to make your Giving Tuesday gift early, please indicate when donating that your gift is in honor of Giving Tuesday. This will allow us to make sure your gift is included in our Giving Tuesday campaign totals.

If you decide to give early, don’t forget to share the graphics included at this bottom of this post on your social media pages. Getting friends involved in giving only makes it more fun!

It is, without a doubt, true that the U.S. foster care system is complex and often misunderstood. On #TuesdayTruth, we are sharing our blog that talks about 8 Myths and Misconceptions of Foster Care, and how SOS Illinois is setting the record straight. https://buff.ly/3ab9Idb

There are many ways you can support teens in foster care. Teens need dedicated and reliable influences. We have needs for Foster Parents, clinical therapists and social workers, and corporate partnerships. SOS Illinois can use your unique skills to support our youth.

There are many reasons why children enter foster care. Addressing these circumstances is essential in reducing the number of children in care and the lengths of stay.
